Even a well-installed camera can produce incomplete or misleading results. Common limitations include:
- Coverage gaps: If the camera’s field of view doesn’t include the critical path (door approach, driveway entry, bike rack area), footage won’t show what you need.
- Lighting conditions: Night performance depends on lighting availability and the camera’s ability to handle infrared illumination, reflections, and fog or heavy rain.

To verify that a camera setup matches your needs, run a small set of checks rather than relying on assumptions:
- Confirm the view covers key zones: Walk the likely paths and check whether faces, entrances, or objects are actually visible from your camera positions.
- Test in expected conditions: Review what happens at night or in low light and during typical weather. Pay attention to reflections and glare.
- Validate motion zones and sensitivity: Use your system’s settings to restrict notifications and recording to the areas that matter.
- Check retention behavior: Determine whether footage is kept long enough for your purpose and whether old footage is automatically overwritten.

When “security camera” isn’t the right concept
Sometimes the term hides a gap between expectation and reality. For example, a camera may provide useful deterrence but not reliable identification due to distance, lighting, or lens placement. Or it may record only motion events, which can miss key context before and after an incident.
