In practice, internet freedom is not a single “on/off” feature. It varies by country, network operator policies, infrastructure, and the choices users can make to route and protect their traffic.
How it works in real life
Internet access starts with routing: your device sends traffic to services using domain names and network paths. Several layers can affect whether the traffic reaches its destination:
- Name resolution (DNS): If domain names fail or are redirected, websites may appear “unavailable” even when the sites themselves are reachable.
- Network routing and filtering: Some traffic can be blocked or selectively restricted based on destination, IP, protocol, or content categories.
- Transport and connection quality: Throttling, congestion, or resets can reduce usability, even if a site is not officially blocked.
