Because it’s free, the provider usually has to cover costs somehow—commonly via advertising, upsells, paid tiers, or other commercial arrangements. This can affect how the service behaves, what features are included, and how clearly the provider explains its privacy practices.

How Free VPNs work (in plain terms)

When you connect to a VPN, your device creates a secure tunnel to a VPN server. Your requests go through that tunnel, are processed on the server side, and then returned to you. From the perspective of:

  • Your local network: it mainly sees encrypted traffic to the VPN server.
  • The websites you visit: it mainly sees the VPN server’s IP address.

  3. DNS and leak protection signals Check whether the VPN client explains how DNS queries are handled and whether leak protection is included. Without this, it’s possible for some traffic patterns to reveal information outside the VPN tunnel.

  4. Real-world behavior Test whether your apparent location (e.g., IP-based geolocation) changes when you connect, and whether it consistently returns to normal when you disconnect. Inconsistent behavior can indicate unstable routing.

When a Free VPN may not be the right fit

A Free VPN can be a reasonable option for low-stakes browsing or short experiments, but it may not fit needs that require strong reliability, predictable performance, or very clear privacy documentation.

Consider avoiding free VPNs if:

  • You need consistent speeds (for video calls, streaming, or large downloads)
