What “online anonymity” depends on
Online anonymity is less about a single magic setting and more about reducing how reliably others can connect network activity to you. In practice, that connection can happen through different visibility points in your network path—such as where domain names are resolved (DNS) and what traffic is exposed to the sites and intermediaries you communicate with.
That is why using either DNS-focused protection or a VPN can matter: each helps limit what information is available to others, even though neither approach automatically removes every linkable signal.
A simple model: where identification can leak
Think of your online activity as two streams of information:

Name resolution (DNS): Before your device reaches a website, it typically resolves a domain name to an IP address. If the DNS requests are observable, they can reveal which domains you’re visiting.

Traffic routing and visibility (VPN): A VPN changes how your traffic is routed. From the perspective of many networks and services outside the VPN, the traffic is associated with the VPN connection rather than directly with your device.
Using DNS protection helps reduce identifying domain-resolution data that might otherwise be exposed. Using a VPN helps reduce the direct visibility of your traffic’s source to destinations and observers along the path.
Why DNS and VPNs are both relevant
DNS: controlling domain-name exposure
Even when the subsequent connection is encrypted, the act of looking up domain names can still expose information. If DNS queries are visible to entities that can associate them with your device or location, they can narrow down your activity. DNS protections aim to reduce that exposure by changing where and how DNS queries are handled.
Important limitation: “using a VPN” does not always mean DNS is automatically protected in the same way. If your system or network still sends DNS queries outside the VPN path, identifying information can leak through the DNS channel.
VPN: reducing direct linkage of traffic
With a VPN, many observers outside the VPN primarily see the VPN connection rather than your local IP address. That can make it harder for destinations, local networks, or intermediaries to directly link requests to you.
Important limitation: anonymity is not guaranteed just because you use a VPN. Other factors—such as authentication, cookies, account identifiers, and browser fingerprinting—can still connect activity to you even if the IP-level linkage is reduced.
Differences, limits, and the key exception

Key exception: DNS leakage
The most common practical exception is DNS leakage, where DNS requests are not handled as you expect relative to the VPN. In that case, you may still expose domain information even though your web traffic is routed through the VPN.
The real boundary: “anonymity” versus “privacy” and “verification”
Both DNS protection and VPN routing reduce certain types of exposure, but they do not remove all avenues of identification. The level of anonymity depends on your threat model and configuration, and you can’t rely on assumptions—verification matters.
Practical checks you can do
- Confirm DNS behavior: Check that DNS queries are handled in the way you intend (for example, that they are not bypassing the VPN path).
- Assume identifiers still exist: Even with reduced IP-level visibility, account logins, cookies, and unique browser characteristics can continue to identify you.
- Match the tool to the leak you’re worried about: If your concern is domain-name exposure, DNS handling is central; if your concern is traffic source visibility, VPN routing is central.
