A VPN kill switch is a safety feature that stops (or greatly restricts) your internet traffic when the VPN connection is not active. The core importance is that a VPN connection can fail or pause unexpectedly—due to network changes, temporary outages, sleep/awake cycles, or app/route issues. Without a kill switch, your device may continue sending traffic through your normal connection while the VPN is down, which can undermine the purpose of using a VPN.
A simple model for how it helps
Think of a kill switch as a gatekeeper between your device and the internet. When the VPN tunnel is up, the gate opens and traffic proceeds through the VPN. When the VPN tunnel goes away, the gate closes, preventing traffic from “going around” the VPN.
This reduces the risk of accidental exposure during brief disconnects. It does not remove every possible privacy risk, and it does not magically guarantee anonymity. Instead, it specifically addresses one common failure mode: traffic continuing when the protected path is unavailable.

A well-designed kill switch focuses on whether traffic can reach the internet when the VPN is unavailable. Depending on implementation, it may:

However, limitations are possible:

- If you enable broad “split” or alternative routing features elsewhere, the kill switch’s effect can change.

Kill switches are especially important when your connection is unstable or when you rely on the VPN for continuous protection. Common situations include moving between Wi‑Fi networks, switching from mobile data to Wi‑Fi, using public networks, or leaving your device asleep and waking it later.
Trade-offs can include interruptions: if the VPN reconnects slowly, the kill switch may keep traffic blocked longer than you expect. That’s often the intended behavior for safety, but it can be inconvenient for real-time work.
The biggest exception to keep in mind is configuration: if the kill switch feature is disabled, misconfigured, or bypassed by networking settings, it may not perform its intended protective role.

If your device still has internet access during a forced VPN drop, the kill switch may not be active for your traffic path, may be limited by OS/app behavior, or may be affected by other routing settings. In that case, review the client and system network permissions and settings.
