  • Untrusted networks: Encryption helps protect traffic from eavesdropping on networks you do not control.
  • Website tracking: Masking your IP may not stop tracking based on cookies or device/browser attributes.
  • Threat model matters: A VPN helps most when the risk is interception or observation on the route between your device and the VPN server.

To check whether a VPN fits your needs, focus on non-marketing details you can evaluate:

  • Whether your traffic is actually routed through the VPN (not just “enabled”)
  • Whether you have protective features turned on (where applicable) such as options that prevent traffic leaks
  • Whether you can understand what the provider can see at connection level

Because there are many implementations, treat exact assurances as uncertain unless you can verify the provider’s described behavior for your scenario.
