Definition: what a VPN is
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a technology that creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN server. Instead of sending your internet traffic directly to websites, your traffic is routed through the VPN server, and the link between your device and that server is protected with encryption.
People use a VPN to reduce exposure of data traveling over networks, especially when the network might be less trustworthy, and to change how online services can see your connection (for example, by not seeing your original IP address).
A simple model of how it works
Think of your VPN connection as a protected “tunnel” for traffic between two points: your device and the VPN server. When you browse:

A VPN is not “total anonymity”
A VPN can improve privacy and protect traffic on the connection path, but it does not eliminate all identification. You may still be identifiable through logins, device or browser behavior, and cookies. Also, the VPN provider (or any entity operating the VPN server) can potentially see metadata about the connection.
It doesn’t automatically make everything safe
A VPN doesn’t remove malware risk, doesn’t protect you from unsafe websites, and doesn’t change what you choose to download or click. The biggest value is in protecting traffic in transit and altering how your IP is presented.

Also, treat the VPN as one layer of protection. For stronger safety, combine it with general security practices (up-to-date software, careful site selection, and cautious downloads).
