What a VPN is (in plain terms)

Also, performance can vary because your traffic travels farther and is encrypted. If a VPN connection drops, your protection may change until connectivity is restored—how that behaves depends on the VPN client’s features and settings.

To decide whether a VPN is helping in a meaningful way, you can verify a few observable signals:
- Confirm that the VPN connection is active in your macOS VPN client and that traffic is being routed through the tunnel.
- Compare IP visibility using an IP check site with the VPN on versus off (expect the visible IP to differ).
- Pay attention to connectivity behavior (for example, whether the connection auto-reconnects) and to general browsing speed changes.
If you need stronger assurance, look for reputable VPN practices such as transparent policies, security-focused configuration options, and clear statements about what data the service can observe—without assuming the VPN removes all tracking.
