A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a service that creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN server. Instead of sending your traffic directly from your device to the websites you visit, your data first goes to the VPN server through this encrypted “tunnel,” and then the VPN server forwards it onward.

This changes what some observers can see on the path between you and the internet—especially on local networks such as your Wi‑Fi provider, your workplace network, or other intermediate networks—because the content is encrypted in transit.

A simple model of how it works

Think of three points:

  1. Your device (where you start the connection).
  2. The VPN tunnel (encrypted path to the VPN server).
  3. The destination website or service (what you’re trying to reach).

When a VPN is enabled, your device typically establishes the secure tunnel to the VPN server, and traffic to destinations is carried through that tunnel. Someone who controls the VPN server side—or has other sources of data—may still be able to correlate activity. Also, websites and apps can identify you through other signals (for example, accounts, device fingerprints, or cookies), which a VPN may not fully prevent.

Differences, limits, and common exceptions

A VPN is not the same as full anonymity, and it is not a universal privacy tool. Key limits include:

  • You trust the VPN provider: If your traffic is routed through a third-party server, that provider becomes part of the path. The provider’s practices and security choices can affect your privacy.
  • It doesn’t stop all tracking: Even if traffic is encrypted and the apparent IP changes, websites may still identify you using account logins, browser data, cookies, or device characteristics.
  • It can’t guarantee safety: A VPN doesn’t automatically protect you from malware, phishing, or malicious websites.

To judge whether a VPN helps your specific situation, focus on controllable checks:

  • Observe what IP address you reveal: With the VPN on and off, compare the public IP shown by a reputable “what is my IP” checker.
  • Check DNS behavior: Look for whether DNS requests are also sent through the protected connection or handled separately (the details vary by setup).
  • Review your own exposure points: Even with a VPN, reduce tracking by limiting logins on sensitive services and managing cookies and browser permissions.
  • Consider the threat model: If your main concern is exposure on a local network, a VPN can help with encryption. If your concern is identification by the destination service, a VPN alone may not be sufficient.
