- Reducing exposure of your real IP address to the websites you visit.
- Making it easier to reach services that are restricted by IP location (availability and effectiveness can vary).
A key limitation is that a VPN does not “solve everything.” If a site uses account logins, browser identifiers, or tracking technologies, the VPN may not stop that tracking.

A VPN changes the path your traffic takes and the IP address that destinations commonly see, but it does not inherently provide absolute privacy or safety. What you still need to consider:

- Device and account risks: malware, unsafe downloads, phishing, or reused credentials are not prevented just by using a VPN.
- Performance trade-offs: encryption and routing through a server can affect speed or reliability, depending on distance and load.
Practical checks you can do
To understand whether a VPN is likely to help in your situation, check:
- Does it encrypt traffic (encryption is the core idea of a VPN)?
- Does your IP address change as seen by common “what is my IP” tools?
- Are there clear settings for what traffic is routed through the VPN (for example, specific apps vs. all traffic)?
- Does your threat model match what a VPN addresses—network interception on the way to the server—rather than everything you do online?
If you’re unsure, start by verifying what changes (IP and routing) and what doesn’t (how websites track you after the connection).
