Some users experience connection interruptions (“disconnect” events) that may expose traffic briefly if the device or app doesn’t handle reconnection securely. Even without naming specific product features, the practical downside is that VPN use adds a moving part to your connection.
Limits for real-world use cases
A VPN is best thought of as a tool for changing routing and adding encryption, not a universal solution. It may not reliably fix streaming, banking portal requirements, or access rules on services that enforce geographic or anti-abuse checks. Similarly, it does not protect you from everything you could do wrong on your device (for example, unsafe browsing behavior or compromised accounts).
The main limitation is scope: it can help with certain threats (like protecting traffic on untrusted networks) while leaving other risks unchanged. If your goal is a specific outcome—like consistent access to one service—you should expect that results can be variable.
Practical checks before you rely on a VPN
First, test performance on your most important activities. Try a nearby server and compare speed and responsiveness against your normal connection.
Second, test the services you actually use. Check login behavior, streaming access (if relevant), and any region-sensitive content.
Third, assess the trust implications. Read the provider’s general privacy and logging disclosures, understand what “no visibility” is not the same as “some visibility,” and treat your privacy model as probabilistic rather than guaranteed.
Differences in downsides between common VPN options
Not all VPN approaches behave the same way. Differences can include how easily you can configure devices, how stable the connection is under roaming networks, and how consistently services allow VPN traffic. Even when two VPN services advertise similar goals, the user-visible downsides can differ based on server locations, capacity, and how providers respond to access restrictions.
If you switch providers, expect some downside categories to improve while others might worsen—performance tuning and service compatibility are often uneven across providers and regions.
