A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a tool that routes your internet traffic through an intermediate service. In practical terms, it creates an encrypted “tunnel” between your device and that VPN service, so other parties on the same network (for example, Wi‑Fi at a café) have less visibility into what you’re sending and receiving.
A VPN can also affect how much network-level information other websites and trackers can associate with you. By exiting from the VPN service’s network, your traffic may appear to come from the VPN’s IP address rather than your own.
Important limit: a VPN doesn’t make you safe by itself. It mainly changes what observers can see in transit and at the network/IP level; it doesn’t remove the need for strong account security, safe browsing, and careful app and browser behavior.

1) Encryption in transit
When a VPN is active, your data is typically encrypted before it leaves your device and is decrypted only after it reaches the VPN service. What a VPN does not protect you from

A VPN can’t tell whether a website is a scam. If you enter credentials on a fraudulent page, the problem is at the user and web-content level, not the traffic encryption level.

If you download malware (or install a malicious extension), encryption won’t stop the payload from executing. Device security tools, browser hygiene, and cautious downloading matter more.

Because the VPN service typically sees decrypted traffic while processing it, the VPN’s trustworthiness matters. Treat a VPN as a trade-off: you move visibility from local observers to the VPN provider and any entities that can observe traffic at other points.

Even with encryption and IP masking, complete anonymity is not something you can assume. Metadata, account behavior, browser fingerprints, or logged-in services can still connect your activity to you.

Encryption helps privacy, not “safety”
Encryption protects against reading traffic contents in transit, but it does not prevent harmful actions like submitting secrets, visiting malicious domains, or clicking on dangerous content.
IP masking is not the same as identity removal
Many trackers use more than IP addresses (for example, cookies, accounts, or browser/device characteristics). A VPN may reduce IP-based linking, but it won’t automatically eliminate tracking.
Network policies and service compatibility
Some services may restrict or challenge traffic that comes from VPN exit networks. This is a common reason you might see login issues, captchas, or access limitations.
Practical checks you can do
- Verify your connection state: use your VPN app’s status indicator to ensure it is actually active when you browse.
- Look for leaks: if you suspect exposure, confirm whether DNS and IP resolution appear to go through the VPN while it’s on (many VPN tools provide diagnostics).
- Strengthen account defenses: use multi-factor authentication and unique passwords, since a VPN won’t protect credentials entered into unsafe sites.
- Keep browser hygiene: limit risky extensions, review permissions, and be cautious with downloads.
- Align expectations with your threat: if your main goal is reducing exposure on public Wi‑Fi, encryption and IP masking are relevant; if your goal is avoiding scams, your browsing and security settings are more decisive.
