For online security, DNS and VPN are not substitutes for each other—they protect different parts of how you reach websites. A VPN mainly helps with what your network path can observe and it encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN provider. DNS settings mainly influence what happens when your device asks for the IP address of a domain (DNS lookups), and how much that lookup can be observed or manipulated.
If you must pick one, choose based on your biggest concern: use DNS-related protections when the main problem is DNS visibility or DNS leaks; use a VPN when you care more about encrypting and shielding your overall connection path. A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel from your device to a VPN endpoint. That means your internet service provider and local network are less able to inspect the content of your traffic, and website destinations see the VPN endpoint’s IP address rather than your original one.

To verify without relying on promises, check that your DNS lookups are handled as you expect and that your traffic routing matches your goal. On a device, look for settings that control DNS resolver choice and whether DNS traffic follows the same protected path as the rest of your connection.
When both goals matter, combine DNS protection (to limit DNS exposure) with a VPN (to protect the broader connection path). This is usually the most robust way to address different exposure points—while still acknowledging that outcomes depend on correct setup.
