If a specific threat model matters (for example, workplace monitoring, targeted harassment, or investigations), you should treat anonymity as a layered objective involving your accounts, browser hygiene, and network behavior—not only the VPN.

You can validate whether a VPN is meeting your anonymity goal by checking observable signals:

  • Compare the IP address shown to websites with the VPN on versus off.
  • If you use privacy tools, check whether they still behave as expected while the VPN is active.
