Use a checklist that focuses on the mechanism and the trade-offs:

  2. Assume websites may still use cookies, logins, and fingerprinting, even with a VPN.
  3. Compare providers using non-promotional, verifiable criteria such as transparency and how they handle logging (and note that exact details can vary over time).

If you approach anonymity as “reducing specific identifiers,” a VPN can be a useful tool—but only within clear boundaries.
