What “online anonymity” really means
Online anonymity usually means reducing what third parties can link to you (for example, which sites you visit and from which network). No single setting guarantees anonymity in all circumstances, because different parts of your connection can reveal different information.
DNS and VPN both relate to privacy, but they cover different points in the path:
- DNS involves domain name lookups (mapping names to IP addresses).
- A VPN changes how your traffic is routed by encrypting and tunneling traffic from your device to the VPN.

A “DNS leak” generally refers to situations where DNS queries reach a resolver you didn’t intend to use, even though you expected privacy controls to route DNS somewhere safer. The exact mechanism depends on operating system, browser/network settings, and how the VPN (if used) handles DNS.
Important limit: even if you think DNS is “protected,” DNS data can still be exposed through misconfiguration, fallback behaviors, or platform-specific networking features. So the relevant question isn’t only “DNS vs VPN,” but “what DNS resolver do you actually use in your current setup?”
VPN limits: it doesn’t automatically fix everything
A VPN can reduce visibility of your traffic to others outside the VPN path, but it doesn’t automatically mean every form of leakage disappears. DNS handling can still be separate, and application-specific connections or local network visibility can still matter depending on your device and configuration.
Also, “best” depends on your threat model. If the observer is the VPN provider itself, the privacy story changes: you’re shifting trust from local/on-path observers to the VPN side and its policies. That’s not a flaw in the concept, just a different assumption set.
How to check what’s actually happening (no guesswork)
You can verify your specific situation locally instead of relying on assumptions:
- Determine what DNS resolver your device uses while browsing (and whether it matches your expectations).
- Check whether your VPN is actively routing traffic for the apps you care about.
- Test both DNS behavior and website connectivity when toggling VPN and DNS-related settings.
If your main goal is preventing domain-name observability, improving DNS handling is often the first lever. If your main goal is reducing readability or tampering by intermediaries, a VPN is the first lever. In many real setups, the most privacy-relevant outcome comes from addressing both surfaces—DNS behavior and VPN routing—while verifying the result on your own device.
