Differences vs a full VPN app
A full VPN client for your device typically routes network traffic more broadly at the operating system level, while a browser extension is usually narrower.
So even if a browser extension protects browsing, it may not provide the same scope as a device-wide VPN client. The key difference is where the routing is applied: browser extension layer versus system-wide networking.
Practical checks you can do
- Check your visible IP from the browser: test a “what is my IP” style page with the extension on and then off.
- Verify whether a site behaves differently: some routing changes can affect access to region-restricted content.
- Look for extension controls: many extensions provide on/off toggles and sometimes per-site rules.
If you notice that only some websites change behavior or your IP appears unchanged, it usually indicates that either (a) the extension isn’t routing that traffic, or (b) the effect you’re checking isn’t the one the extension modifies.
