When VPN traffic is encrypted, your device must encrypt outgoing data and decrypt incoming data. This requires CPU or hardware acceleration. If your device is older, lacks acceleration, or is busy, the added processing can reduce download and upload speed.
Different routing
With a VPN, your traffic typically goes to a VPN server first, then from that server to the destination. That can increase distance, add hops, or route around certain ISP paths. Any added distance or less efficient path can raise latency and reduce throughput.
Server capacity and congestion
Even if the routing is efficient, the VPN server has to handle your traffic along with others. If the selected server is busy or far away relative to your location, you may experience lower speeds.

- Try different VPN servers (especially ones closer to your location) and compare results.
- Check your device load and network type (Wi‑Fi vs Ethernet). Weak Wi‑Fi can mask VPN effects.
- Measure both download/upload and ping. A VPN might keep throughput similar while latency increases.
If your speeds are consistently poor only on certain servers, the likely causes are server load or routing inefficiency. If speeds are poor even without the VPN, the issue is probably outside the VPN.
Finally, be cautious with overconfident expectations: because encryption cost, routing, and congestion vary, results can differ day to day.
