A protocol that is excellent for one situation may be less convenient for another.

Compare options using “what would change if I switch?”

When you try to compare protocols, don’t rely only on general reputation. Instead, ask measurable questions about your own experience:

  • Does page loading feel smoother or slower?
  • Do real-time activities (calls, streams) buffer less?
  • Does the connection stay up or repeatedly reconnect?
  • Do you see higher latency during specific tasks?

If your client allows it, switch protocols for a controlled test period and observe changes under similar conditions (same location, roughly same time, similar app usage).

Know the main exceptions and limits

There are cases where protocol choice matters less—or where the “best” protocol depends on hidden constraints:

  1. Network policies can block certain traffic patterns. Even if a protocol is fast in theory, it may not connect consistently.
  2. Client and platform maturity varies. The same protocol name can behave differently across devices or software versions.
  3. Background traffic can dominate the experience. If your bandwidth is the limiting factor, protocol changes may help less than adjusting network quality or activity.
