If you log into personal accounts, use the same identifiers (usernames, email addresses), or keep browser profiles that carry persistent signals, those links can still associate activity with you regardless of IP masking. Privacy and security overlap, but they’re not identical. A VPN commonly improves privacy by hiding your IP address from destination sites and by encrypting traffic on the path to the VPN server. Security benefits can include protection against some forms of network eavesdropping. However, anonymity is more than encryption and IP masking; it also depends on account context and how your actions can be linked over time.
If your goal is to reduce tracking, focus on limiting account-based correlation and browser/device signals—not only on using a VPN.
Practical checks you can do
You can validate the impact of a VPN in a non-speculative way by checking whether your public IP changes when you connect. Also confirm that your connection is established before browsing (so traffic actually routes through the VPN tunnel). Finally, review what identifiers you send while browsing—especially whether you’re logged into accounts, using browser profiles with persistent data, or exposing information through plugins and cookies.
If you need stronger anonymity, treat a VPN as one component. The biggest remaining uncertainty is how linking signals (accounts, device behavior, and persistent identifiers) will still work even when your IP is masked.
