- They generally need a working channel to observe or capture the feed (for example, by collecting or relaying data through software they control).
- If camera access is blocked or the app is prevented from using it, they can’t record.
Also, camera indicators and device behavior are not a perfect measurement. Some legitimate software may use the camera briefly (for calls, scans, or video features), while certain privacy indicators can be subtle or inconsistent across devices.
Differences that change the risk
The likelihood of camera exposure changes with a few non-technical factors:

- Check for unusual battery drain, overheating, or repeated background activity.
- Keep your operating system and apps updated.
- If you suspect compromise, consider removing suspicious apps and running built-in security tools (if available on your device).
