How malvertising works
Malvertising is the practice of using online advertisements to spread malware or push users toward harmful actions. Instead of “clicking a virus” directly from a standalone website, the threat path is usually tied to the ad experience: an ad is displayed, then it may redirect you, load content from another domain, or trigger a script that attempts to exploit a weakness in your browser or plugins.
In many cases, the malicious component is not visible at first glance. You might see a legitimate-looking ad, but the landing destination (the page you end up on) can be different from what you expect. Or the ad may immediately start downloads, show urgent prompts, or try to trick you into enabling permissions. The goal is to get you to either run something, install something, or interact with something that leads to compromise.
What a VPN can (and can’t) do for malvertising
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) primarily changes the network path between your device and the VPN provider. In plain terms, your traffic goes through an encrypted tunnel to the VPN, and then exits to the internet. This can help with certain privacy and traffic-observation scenarios—such as reducing what your internet service provider can see about your browsing—depending on the broader context.
However, it’s important to separate “network privacy” from “content safety.” A VPN does not inherently make malicious ad content safe. If an ad delivers a harmful page, a VPN can still connect you to that harmful page. The same browser vulnerabilities, social-engineering tricks, and malicious downloads can still occur after the connection is established.

You can’t fully control what ads show, but you can reduce the likelihood that an ad leads to real harm.

Even with precautions, malvertising risk can’t be reduced to zero, because malicious ads can change rapidly and can target different browser behaviors. A VPN won’t neutralize harmful scripts; it mainly affects how your connection is routed and observed.
The most reliable red flags are behavioral rather than cosmetic. Watch for:
- Unexpected permission requests (camera, microphone, notifications) from pages you didn’t intentionally choose.
- Urgency language that pressures you to act immediately.
- Confusing downloads or prompts that appear to come from the browser but are triggered right after clicking an ad.
- Frequent redirects or “broken” navigation patterns.
If you encounter these, the safest move is to stop interacting, close the page, and re-check your environment. Consider running a reputable malware scan and reviewing recently installed extensions, especially if you clicked through from an ad.
