Practical checks to validate you’re actually protected

Instead of assuming anonymity, run basic, observable checks.

  1. Check your visible IP address while connected When the VPN is active, your public IP as seen by common “what is my IP” tools should change from your typical network IP to the VPN’s IP. If it doesn’t, the VPN may not be routing correctly.

  2. Check for DNS or connection leakage indicators Use reputable leak-check tools (or controlled tests) to see whether DNS queries and WebRTC-style connection paths are behaving as expected. If you observe unexpected results, the VPN setup may be incomplete or inconsistent.

  3. Confirm kill-switch or “VPN required” behavior (if available) Some VPN setups can prevent traffic from going out when the VPN connection drops. If your traffic continues to reach the internet during a disconnect, anonymity can be reduced because some activity may no longer be protected by the VPN tunnel.

  4. Look for app-by-app inconsistencies Test whether the privacy behavior is consistent across browsers and other apps (for example, web browsing vs. a background sync app). Inconsistent routing often points to settings that need adjustment.
