What an ad blocker and a VPN do (and don’t do)

On a public Wi‑Fi network (or a test network), compare what your device appears to send to your local network (for example, by using browser/network inspection tools). You should typically see that connections are associated with the VPN tunnel rather than directly to many destinations.

  3. Look for broken functionality and adjust carefully. If essential features stop working, try enabling the ad blocker for general use but allowlist the specific site if needed—only if you understand the trade-off.

  4. Don’t skip account defenses. Even with a VPN and ad blocker, ensure you use multi-factor authentication where available, keep your operating system and browser updated, and watch for suspicious logins or emails.

  5. Assess your threat model. If your main risk is tracking/ads, an ad blocker may deliver most of the benefit. If your main concern is protecting against local network eavesdropping, a VPN may be more relevant.

Limitations and the “one tool isn’t enough” rule
