What it means to “change your IP address”

An IP address is the network address your device uses to communicate with the internet. When you connect to a VPN, your traffic is routed through a VPN server, so many external services will typically see the VPN server’s public IP address instead of your home or mobile IP.

It helps to separate two ideas: (1) the IP address your device uses on your local network, and (2) the public IP address other sites observe. A VPN mainly affects the second one.

How a VPN changes your visible IP

Most VPNs work by creating an encrypted tunnel between your device and a VPN server. After that, your requests (for example, to load a webpage) travel from the VPN server to the destination on the internet, and the responses travel back through the tunnel.

Because the destination receives the traffic coming from the VPN server, it often records the VPN server’s IP as the client address. In practical terms, that means “changing your IP address” is usually about changing the public IP address that remote services perceive.

The limits and common exceptions

A VPN can change the IP address you appear to use, but it doesn’t make everything identical in every situation. Key limitations include:

  • Not all traffic may be routed through the VPN. Some configurations, apps, or network paths can bypass the VPN.
  • DNS can affect what services see. Even if web traffic is routed through the VPN, domain lookups may occur outside the VPN unless DNS handling is configured to use the VPN.
  • “IP address changed” doesn’t automatically mean “tracking stopped.” Services may still identify you using cookies, logins, device signals, or other non-IP data.
  • Your VPN provider can still observe metadata within the bounds of what their system can see. A VPN shifts what outsiders see; it does not remove all visibility from every party.

Also note that some services may detect VPN use through traffic patterns or known VPN server ranges. This may affect access or content in ways unrelated to your IP alone.

Practical checks you can do after connecting

You can confirm whether your public IP effectively changed by doing simple before/after comparisons.

  1. Check your public IP while disconnected. Use a public “what is my IP” style website (or a trusted network diagnostic tool) to record the displayed IP.
  2. Connect to your VPN and use the same type of check. Compare the displayed IP to your earlier value.
  3. If it didn’t change, look for likely causes. Common reasons include VPN not connected, “killswitch”/network restrictions not configured, app-specific routing bypassing the VPN, or DNS still resolving outside the tunnel.
  4. Test from the same device and browser context. Clear understanding usually requires repeating checks in a consistent environment.

If you see your IP change but suspect other leakage, focus on whether DNS and any other network traffic are also being handled through the VPN. Exact steps depend on your VPN client and operating system, so treat any specific menu names as device-specific.
