What it means to “hide your IP address”
An IP address is a network identifier that helps devices route traffic across the internet. When you visit a website, the server typically sees the IP address of the connection that reaches it.
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) changes the path of your traffic. Instead of your device connecting directly to the website, your device sends traffic to a VPN server first. From the website’s point of view, the incoming connection usually comes from the VPN server’s IP address rather than your own.
How a VPN protects your online identity (and what it can’t)
A VPN can support privacy in several ways:
- Changing the visible source IP: Many sites and third parties log the IP address they see. With a VPN enabled, that logged source is often the VPN server’s address.
- Reducing exposure on untrusted networks: On public Wi‑Fi or other networks you don’t control, a VPN can help protect data in transit by encrypting traffic between your device and the VPN server.
- Limiting some forms of network-based tracking: If trackers rely heavily on the IP address for correlation, using a VPN may reduce how directly they can link your requests to your home or mobile network.
However, “protect your online identity” is not the same as “be unseen.” Key limitations to understand:
- Websites can still identify you by other signals. Even if the IP changes, sites may still use cookies, logins, browser fingerprinting, account identifiers, and behavioral data.
- VPN use may not cover every kind of leak. Misconfiguration, DNS settings, browser extensions, or network conditions can sometimes cause parts of traffic to bypass the VPN or reveal details.
- The VPN provider can see traffic metadata (and potentially more). Even when content is encrypted in transit to the VPN server, the provider typically handles the connection you’re using. How much is visible depends on implementation and the specific traffic.
Differences that affect results: VPN vs browsing settings vs device identifiers
Not all “IP hiding” outcomes are equal. The visible IP can be influenced by multiple components besides the VPN app:
- DNS behavior: If DNS queries are not handled through the VPN, the domain lookups you perform may reveal information even when the web traffic goes through the VPN.
- IPv6 vs IPv4: Some networks and devices may use IPv6. If only one protocol is routed through the VPN correctly, the other may still expose details.
- Location and routing assumptions: The country/region of the VPN server can differ from your real location. Some services use IP geolocation; others combine IP signals with additional identifiers.
- Account logins: If you sign in to services, identity can persist regardless of IP changes.
Because there are many moving parts, the most reliable approach is to treat IP hiding as something you verify on your own system.
Practical checks to confirm your IP and privacy changes
You can perform a few non-destructive checks to see whether your IP is actually changing when the VPN is on.
- Compare the “visible IP” before and after enabling the VPN. Use a reputable “what is my IP” style web page twice: once with the VPN off, then with it on. If the IP shown to the site changes, the VPN is affecting the source address.
- Verify DNS handling when possible. Look for settings related to DNS protection inside your VPN app or OS network options. While details vary, the goal is to prevent DNS lookups from bypassing the VPN.
- Check for IPv6 behavior if your device supports it. If your VPN or network environment doesn’t handle IPv6 consistently, you may see different results depending on which protocol the connection uses.
- Repeat tests in the same browser/profile. Use the same browser session or profile to reduce confusion from caching, accounts, and extensions.
If you still see your own network IP after enabling a VPN, common causes include VPN not connected, traffic not routed, protocol mismatch, or DNS leakage. In that case, avoid assuming privacy is improved and focus on fixing the configuration.
Quick caution: privacy improves, but “identity invisibility” doesn’t
A VPN can meaningfully improve privacy by changing the IP address that many servers see and by encrypting traffic between your device and the VPN server. Still, identity protection is broader than IP address alone.
For predictable outcomes, verify the change yourself, keep other privacy controls aligned (for example, minimizing tracking that doesn’t depend on IP), and be cautious about what you disclose through logins or persistent identifiers. If you need stronger protection for specific threats, evaluate each threat model separately rather than relying on IP hiding alone.
