Differences: “targeted ads” vs. “personalized recommendations”
Not every relevant ad is necessarily “targeted” in the same way. Two common distinctions:
- Behavior-based targeting: ads adapt to your browsing or interaction history.
- Contextual selection: ads align with the topic of the page you’re currently viewing.
Even with strong tracking limitations, contextual ads can still appear because they don’t require long-term profiling.
When targeting might persist despite your efforts
Targeting can still happen if:
- sites use first-party tracking tied to a login account;
- contextual signals are strong enough to infer interests;
- you interact with content that triggers profiling signals;
- some parts of the web or apps use their own tracking methods.
The most realistic goal is to reduce the precision and continuity of the data used for ad decisions—not to assume complete prevention.
