If you notice requests still appear to come from your original network, investigate your network and VPN settings. Browser and system tools can sometimes reveal whether traffic is consistently routed through the VPN.
3) Compare cookie/account behavior
Use a controlled test: sign out (or use a fresh browser profile) and clear relevant cookies for the test sites. Then compare tracking and session linking with and without the VPN.
4) Watch for persistent identifiers
Even after changing IP, some sites will continue to recognize repeat visitors through stored identifiers. If a site still “remembers” you after you remove cookies and avoid logins, that recognition is likely coming from non-IP signals.
5) Evaluate real-world pages, not assumptions
Different sites behave differently. Test on a few representative services (one informational site, one media site, one shopping/login site) to understand how much the VPN context changes.
How to set expectations responsibly
If your goal is “total online security” through one tool, the strongest accurate framing is: a VPN can reduce certain network-level tracking and improve privacy in transit, but it does not eliminate all forms of identification or tracking. The remaining exposure depends heavily on cookies, logins, browser/device characteristics, and whether traffic stays consistently routed through the VPN.
