P2P and torrent tools usually involve many simultaneous connections to multiple peers. With a VPN enabled, those connections may go through the tunnel, but not every part of your system is necessarily covered in the same way. DNS lookups, IPv6 behavior, and local firewall rules can influence what leaks or what connectivity breaks.

Two operating-condition details matter: (1) the VPN connection must actually be established and stable for the relevant interface, and (2) your device must handle DNS and IP versions consistently with the tunnel. If either fails, you can see reduced performance, connectivity errors, or traffic that does not follow your expected path.

The most important limitation is overconfidence: “VPN on” is not the same as “all risks solved.” Additionally, performance varies widely. Congestion, distance to the VPN exit, NAT traversal issues, and peer availability can make torrents slower or unusable at certain times.
