What you should know when evaluating online tracking with a VPN
A user diagnosing or configuring a VPN should treat online tracking as a mix of signals, not a single switch. A VPN mainly affects what remote sites can see about your connection (especially IP-level information). It does not automatically prevent all tracking, because websites and apps can use other identifiers (for example, device and browser signals) and some tracking may occur outside the IP view.
What the VPN changes (and what it doesn’t)
Think of a VPN as an “tunnel” that routes your internet traffic through a different network endpoint. From the perspective of a website, the connection typically appears to come from the VPN’s exit point rather than your home network. That can help if the tracking method relies on IP address or network location.
However, tracking can still happen through non-IP mechanisms such as cookies, local storage, browser fingerprints, account identifiers, or redirects within the same site. If you log into a service while using a VPN, account-based tracking can still link activity across sessions.
How the operating conditions affect results
When results differ, the cause is usually operational rather than “magic.” Key conditions include:
- Device and app behavior (some apps may bypass the VPN or use their own network paths)
- Browser settings and stored identifiers (cookies and site permissions)
- Network type (mobile vs. Wi‑Fi) and where the VPN client routes traffic
- Time and location effects (different paths can change which network observations are possible)
- VPN configuration details (protocol and routing options)
Main limitations to keep in mind
First, avoid assuming safety, anonymity, or access are guaranteed. A VPN is only one part of the tracking picture. Second, performance and availability can vary by network, device, location, and time, which can indirectly influence debugging and how stable your tests are. Third, if you rely on current product-specific or empirical claims (for example, about particular protocols or tracking resistance), validate them with an authoritative, up-to-date reference rather than expecting universal behavior.
