How it works (and where the expectations can break)

A VPN routes your device’s internet traffic through a tunnel to a VPN server. That can change what a website or third party can observe about your IP address, and it may reduce certain forms of IP-based tracking. However, a VPN does not automatically fix all browser privacy problems: browsers still send other signals (for example, within cookies, storage, and browser-identifying information) and websites can track users through behaviors and identifiers that a VPN cannot remove.

Use the right operating conditions when diagnosing

VPN connection “problems” can look like privacy or tracking issues, but the root cause may be different. Network conditions, the device, the browser, the user account/session state, DNS handling, and time of day can all affect whether traffic is routed as expected. Also, the same VPN configuration can perform differently across locations and networks, so a single quick test may not reflect your everyday experience.

Practical verification you can do in a browser

Instead of assuming privacy from the VPN icon alone, verify with repeatable checks:

  • Confirm the VPN is connected, then reload a test page in the same browser session and note whether the visible IP information changes.
  • Check for DNS behavior: if the browser or OS leaks DNS outside the tunnel, you may still expose queries.
  • Inspect browser data effects: log out/in, clear relevant cookies for the test site, and then compare behavior with and without the VPN.
  • Compare multiple sites and keep tests consistent (same browser profile, same device, and similar timing) to avoid false conclusions.

Limitations to keep in mind during troubleshooting

A VPN is not a guarantee of anonymity, safety, or unbreakable privacy. Even with a working connection, verification typically proves only what you tested (for example, IP visibility or a specific DNS path), not every tracking method. Performance and availability can vary, and misconfigurations (at the browser, OS, or router level) can undermine expected routing.
